Varalaxmi comes from a prominent film family.   She is the eldest daughter of veteran actor and politician R.   Sarathkumar and his first wife, Chaya.    Her stepmother is the legendary actress Raadhika Sarathkumar.

Despite her father's stardom, she initially faced challenges entering the industry. Legend has it she was selected for Shankar’s Boys (2003) but turned it down at her father’s request to focus on her education first.

After years of delays, she debuted in the Tamil romantic drama Podaa Podi (2012) alongside Silambarasan (Simbu). Her performance as a professional dancer in London was highly praised and earned her the Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress.
