1. Early Life and Education

Born to Viswanathan Nair (a Law Secretary) and Santhakumari, Mohanlal grew up in Thiruvananthapuram. Interestingly, acting wasn't his first major achievement; he was the Kerala State Wrestling Champion in 1977-78.

His acting journey began in school. While in the 6th grade, he played a 90-year-old man in a stage play called Computer Boy, a role that hinted at his natural ability to transform into any character.

2. Rise to Superstardom

  • The "Invisible" Debut: His first film, Thiranottam (1978), was made by a group of friends but was banned by censors and only released 25 years later.

  • The Breakout Villain: His actual screen debut came in 1980 with Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where he played the antagonist, Narendran. His unique style and mannerisms immediately caught the public’s eye.

  • The 1986 Phenomenon: This year defined his career. He appeared in a staggering 36 films in one year. The success of Rajavinte Makan (where he played the underworld don Vincent Gomez) cemented his status as a "Superstar."

3. Artistic Versatility

Unlike many stars who stick to a "hero" image, Mohanlal is famous for his range:

  • Naturalism: He is praised for his subtle, "non-acting" style in films like Bharatham, Kireedam, and Thanmathra.

  • Physicality: Known for his incredible body language, he famously mastered the classical dance of Kathakali for Vanaprastham and performed his own stunts in the blockbuster Pulimurugan.

  • Non-Malayalam Cinema: He has made iconic marks in Tamil (Iruvar), Hindi (Company), and Telugu (Janatha Garage).

4. Major Awards and Honours

Mohanlal is one of the most decorated actors in India:

  • National Film Awards: Won 5 times (2 for Best Actor, 1 Special Jury Mention, 1 Special Jury Award, and 1 as a producer).

  • Civilian Honours: Awarded the Padma Shri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2019) by the Government of India.

  • Military Rank: In 2009, he became the first actor to be awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army.

  • Dadasaheb Phalke Award: In 2025, he was honoured with this prestigious award for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.

5. Beyond Acting

Mohanlal is a multi-faceted personality:

  • Producer: Owns Aashirvad Cinemas, one of Kerala's most successful production houses.

  • Singer: Has lent his voice to over 30 songs.

  • Philanthropist: Founded the ViswaSanthi Foundation, focusing on healthcare and education for the underprivileged.

  • Director: He made his directorial debut with the 3D fantasy film Barroz (2024).
