Early Life and Education

Born Matthew Paige Damon on October 8, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was raised in a family that valued education. His mother was a professor of early childhood education, and his father was a stockbroker.

After his parents divorced when he was two, Damon was raised in a communal house in Cambridge. It was here, at age 10, that he met Ben Affleck, who lived just two blocks away. The two became fast friends, bonding over their shared love for acting and baseball.

Damon attended Harvard University as an English major. However, he famously dropped out just 12 credits short of graduation to pursue a lead role in the film Geronimo: An American Legend (1993).

The Breakthrough: Good Will Hunting

While at Harvard, Damon wrote a 40-page draft for a playwriting class. This script eventually evolved into Good Will Hunting (1997). Unable to find roles they liked, Damon and Affleck decided to star in the film themselves.

The movie was a massive critical and commercial success, earning nine Oscar nominations. At age 27, Damon won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, catapulting him to A-list status overnight.
